Outdoor Activities to Do in the Fall Before the Weather Gets Cold

By Jerry P

The temperatures are finally starting to cool down and outdoor enthusiasts are eager to get out and take advantage of this beautiful time of year. Once the cold and wet conditions of winter begin to take hold, it becomes more challenging to get outdoors and get up close and personal with nature. Now is the time to start your outdoor activities bucket list for the fall. Here are three activities to consider before winter arrives and sends you indoors.

Biking

Regardless of if you are cycling on the roads or on the trails, the low humidity and cooler temperatures of this time of year provide the perfect environment. It is easy to layer your bike gear so that you are always comfortable, regardless of the conditions. It’s important to be safe while biking as there are many causes of bicycle accidents, so remain alert as you’re out on the road. Wet leaves can be slick, so take extra care when traversing on wooded trails. Be sure to be mindful of the shorter days by wearing reflective clothing.

Hiking

The smell of wet leaves as your hiking boots take to the trails is one of the best parts of the fall season. Hiking enthusiasts understand that fall is one of the best times of the year to hit the trails. In addition to temperate weather, you will also enjoy the bursting colors of fall as the trees make their transformation before winter arrives. Your hiking adventure does have to involve an all-day trek up into the mountains. Even a simple stroll through a local conservation area will deliver a host of cardiovascular benefits while you connect with Mother Nature in all of her fall splendor.

Running

Running during the fall is a joy. There is a reason why so many of the country's most popular marathons happen during the fall. Chicago, Washington, D.C., and New York all boast fall marathons because of moderate temperatures and dry conditions, delivering weather that is perfect for lacing up your shoes and hitting the pavement. As a bonus, you will enjoy indulging in all of the tastes of the holidays if you know that you worked hard in the fall by running. Running is an incredible all-over workout. In addition to the vast cardiovascular benefits, running will also improve your lower body strength and tone the body. One of the best feelings in the world is finishing a long run on a cool and crisp fall morning and then coming home to relax with a warm cup of coffee and a good football game on the television.

Although it is tempting to cozy up at home when the days get shorter and the hot weather of summer is gone, fall is actually the ideal time to get outdoors. Once the temperatures plunge and the snow begins to fall, you will be happy that you took advantage of the fantastic fall weather to get outdoors and exercise.
